We anchor off of Siglufjordur and get ready for our 11:30 AM herring show with tasting. This turns out to be a great experience. The “herring girls” put on a show for the first of three buildings that form the museum. We are only 25 miles from the Arctic Circle. The midnight sun shines bright all night long from June 9th for about a month forward. The extreme, during the winter is the very short days - the shortest amount of daylight is around December 22nd (just over 2.5 hours)! The evocative remoteness appealed to dark Nordic Noir writers and the town has found recent fame as the start of the TV show Trapped
We discover that this town during the middle of the 20th century from 1905 to1965 was the booming fish capital of Iceland responsible for almost 50% of its export. It was, of course, herring. This maritime themed Museum is a real treasure. I took fabulous photos of Anni dancing with the costumed herring girls and salt boy. We entered the second building and reviewed what a wharf would look like including full-size fishing boats. The town was like Sodom from biblical times with sin and song everywhere. What a great experience.
Back to the ship for casual night and dinner at La Terrazza. We also spent some time after dinner in La Dolce Vita for "Cabaret: An Evening with Rachael" which was music of Doris Day, Dusty Springfield, Etta James and more. Good night.
