June 2, 2022 - Akureyri, Iceland (Iceland's capital of the North)

Silver Moon docks at Akureyri. We have been invited to the Grand Voyage event which will take us across the bay to Flatley Island. We do see and get pictures of some humpback whales during this frosty, misty boat ride in an original Icelandic wooden vessel. As always, they provide us with rainwear, etc. We arrive and took a walk around this deserted island, which only had a few summer cottages and a church. However, it is a Mecca for the birdwatchers as there are over 40 varieties of birds and, of course, lots of puffins.

Anni was very impressed with the fact that they erected a building specifically for this event (just finishing before we sat down). They had it set up with long tables with tablecloths, candles, heaters, flowers, and all types of furry and warm animal skins to sit on along with warm blankets, etc. The lunch was seafood soup, Lamb for Bob and Tofu meatloaf for Anni (which was a pleasant surprise to her), dessert, hot toddies and of course, wine! Our ride back is still cold but not quite as long. Our young lady guide from Venice, Italy, was excellent. It’s will take some time for us to get rid of the chill as this was almost a nine-hour event. We returned to the ship at approximately 9:45 PM.

Because we decided to take part in this event, we did miss some "beautiful roaring waterfalls, soaring volcanoes and wildlife in Akureyri. It is 60 miles from the Arctic Circle and apparently "blossoms with a bright, cosmopolitan feel during the summer months with outdoor cafes and open-air bathing spots. There is also peaceful Botanical Gardens which opened up in 1957. Definitely sounds more beautiful in the summer!
